Johan de Cock (DipABRSM)
Piano ✭ Music Theory ✭ Composition
I have been teaching the piano, music theory and music production for over 20 years in London, Ascot & Brighton; people of all different ages and levels, from complete beginners to advanced players. I love all types of music passionately and teach most styles, including classical, jazz, Latin, rock, pop, and even EDM for DJ/producers.
I have a lot of patience and experience with starting beginners (especially adults) from scratch, dealing with nerves and stage-fright, and strongly believe that it is never too late to start learning to play a musical instrument! My main focus is always on having fun with the music, and helping you to express yourself creatively.
Playing technique is approached in a relaxed (tension-free) and open-minded way, incorporating all the best bits of the many different piano schools. Lessons are tailored to each student, and may incorporate music theory, ear training, sight reading, improvisation, songwriting, music history or computer technology, depending on the student’s interests and needs.
I teach on a digital Yamaha Clavinova CLP-465GP baby grand piano from our studio in sunny Saltdean, East Brighton.

"I've recently started playing the piano again after a 20 year break. I didn't know what to expect, but have had a fabulous experience with Jay. I feel like I've already made such huge progress, learned a lot, and am feeling more confident by the day. Jay is a brilliant teacher - kind and funny, but also driven to get the best out of his pupils. His passion for all kind of music shines through, as does his immense knowledge and skill. I've been playing a wonderful mix of pieces - from Chopin to BIlly Joel. I couldn't recommend him highly enough!"

Highly recommend!"

"I count myself very fortunate to have found such an enthusiastic, inspiring and dedicated teacher such as Jay.
I’ve been coming for almost a year now and have enjoyed every lesson due to his positive feedback, humour, anecdotes and the wealth of strategies he can “pull from the bag “ - all of which have improved my playing technique and overall confidence.
As well as being an extremely competent pianist himself, Jay’s lessons are well paced, encompass different musical genres and he has a wide knowledge of composers and the piano repertoire.
In short, I can honestly say that I have never left one of Jay’s lessons without a “spring in my step“."
